These birds have a greenish-grey back that merges with their bright yellow breast and chin. A yellow streak is noticeable near the eye. The male is distinguished by their melodious singing. Their song is particularly very pleasant and beautiful to hear especially during breeding season when lots of males show off their singing abilities to the females.
Females, like all other female finches, are of the same color but duller than the male. Another distinguishing factor between the male and female other than the male’s ability to sing beautifully is that the females have black spots above their neck that make them look like they’re wearing a fashionable necklace.
These birds can get aggressive towards other types of finches. One solution would be to provide ample room for everyone so that they can establish their territory. An outdoor aviary is ideal in this situation, not typical cages. They still won’t be friendly to other finches – or other birds for that matter – if they are housed in an indoor cage. Additionally, a pair of green singers must have their own privacy and cannot be housed with other green singers because they harass them especially when they’re nesting.
Even if left among their kind, and even though they are quite small, they still need ample space to fly since they are highly active birds. When living in indoors cages, a full spectrum bulb made especially for birds should be installed.
Parent green finches will live with their fledgling only up to the next clutch of eggs. They can get along fairly well with canaries provided that there is an ample cover, feeding sites, and perches.
Their nests, mostly resembling a cup shape, are made of grass, animal hair, and moss. Their eggs are blue green in color and like other finches, both parent finches take turns in incubating their eggs.
Favoring shrubs and open forests, ranches and farms, these unique finches prefer a semi-arid environment and a diet composed of seeds, shrubs, and grasses. Not to mention, that they also enjoy plant sprouts. A basic seed mix especially made for finches is okay but they do need a little variety every once in a while. They eat mealworms and small insects such as crickets. They love picking on small slices of fruits such as oranges, apples, berries, grapes, and grass sprouts; they also prefer green food more than all the other types of finches. In the wild, they do not go in large flocks but prefer to hunt for food in pairs or in small groups.
Green singing finches can live to an impressive 20 years provided that the basics in health such as food and housing are met.
