Wildlife in Uganda

Uganda is not your ordinary safari destination, it is a country very rich in fauna and flora which are seen in the 12 national parks in the country. Uganda has both large and small animal species which include primate, carnivores, and herbivores which include antelopes; both large and small antelopes.

Primates are exceptionally well represented in Uganda and these include the gorilla that is the mountain gorillas, the chimpanzee.The chimpanzee is closely related to humans than any other living creatures, monkeys. These fall into categories of five namely; baboons, patas monkey, vervet monkeys, blue monkeys, red tailed monkeys, de braza’s monkeys. L’Hoest’s monkey, grey checked mangabey, black and white colobus, and red colobus.

The lion, the largest African carnivore, the leopard commonly sighted in Kidepo national park and Murchison falls national park, cheetah also seen more often in the wildest Kidepo national park. Uganda has also small cats including; caracal, African wild cat, canids, Jackals, bat eared fox, African hunting dog. Other carnivores found in Uganda are, spotted hyena, African civet, genets, otters, mongooses and ratel,

Uganda has 29 antelopes species namely; common eland, greater kudu, hartebeest, defessa waterbuck, roan antelope, Uganda kob, bushbuck, sitantunga  commonly found in swampy areas, lesser kudu, grant’s gazelle, reedbuck, Impala, grey duiker, Forest duiker, beate’s pygmy antelope, klipspringer, Oribi and Guenther’s dirk dirk

Other herbivores found in the country include the elephant, the world’s larges t animals and the most intelligent and entertaining to watch. Rhinoceros, Hippopotamus, African buffalo, Giraffe, burchell’s zebra, warthog, Hyraxes to mention but a few.

Bird life in Uganda is so great no wonder it is said to be the paradise of birds having over 1000 bird species including;  African Skimmer, Black Rumped Button Quail, Verreaux’s Eagle Owl, Red Footed Falcon, Lesser Flamingoes, Grey Capped Warbler, White’s and Abdim’s Storks , Amur Falcon, Ovampo Sparrow hawk, Wooly-necked and Saddle-billed Storks, Vultures and Plovers the Great White and Pink-backed Pelicans, Great and Long-tailed Cormorants, Open-billed Stork, African Jacana, Malachite and Pied Kingfishers.  Bwindi  Forest is a home to 350 bird species, 23 bird species endemic to the Albertine Rift, and at least 14 bird species recorded nowhere else in the country, among them the African green broadbill, white-tailed blue flycatcher, brown-necked parrot, white- bellied robin chat and Frazer’s eagle owl  Uganda also has reptiles namely; the amazing huge rock-Python, Puffadders, Spitting Cobras, Gabon Rippers, Green Mambas, Turtles and the Nile Crocodiles which are the largest crocodile Africa has left.
