If you’re a guinea pig owner you might have given some thought to breeding guinea pigs as a hobby. This can be very fun and educational. If you decide to take on this ambitious hobby then you need to make sure that you have the time, the space, the money, and most importantly, the knowledge to do it correctly.
There are Two Breeding Methods
The two standard methods for breeding cavies are the “Monogamous Pairs” method, and the “Polygamous Group” method.
With the monogamous pairs method you will put a single male cavy, called a boar, with a single female cavy, called a sow. With this type of arrangement it is very common for the sow to bred again during what is called the “postpartum estrus”. A monogamous pair can produce as many as five litters per year if the sow is bred following each litter and during her postpartum estrus cycle. She will only produce 3 litters per year if she is not bred during her postpartum estrous.
With the polygamous group breeding method a single boar is placed with a group of females, usually four to six of them. If you plan to breed your cavies using this method you need to make sure that the cavies are housed in a very large cage in order to avoid overcrowding, which can cause the sows to become stressed. Never place more than one boar with a group of females. doing so will result in violent fighting which will certainly lead to injury if not death.
When one of the sows in the group becomes pregnant there are two options which can be considered:
- The pregnant sow can be moved to a cage of her own to give birth and then returned after her litter of pups has been weaned. If this option is chosen then the sow will not be bred again on her postpartum estrous.
- The pregnant sow can remain in the same cage with the group and the entire group will take part in raising the pups. If this option is chosen then the sow will more likely be bred immediately during her postpartum estrous.
Once this group is established it should ideally never be changed by introducing new animals to the herd. This is because cavies don’t cope well with change and it causes them great stress and anxiety. If you do make changes and the cavies get too stressed they may stop eating and drinking and quickly develop medical problems. If you do decide to replace any of the animals be sure to observe all of them very carefully after they have been introduced and keep an eye out for any problems.
Outcrossing
Outcrossing is the term used to describe the breeding of two unrelated animals. Outcrossing will have unpredictable results because you are generally not familiar with the genetic makeup of one or both of the cavies being bred. This type of breeding is usually reserved for when a breeder wants to introduce new blood to his breeding stock.
Linebreeding
Linebreeding is the term used to describe the method wherein you are frequently breeding your best animal(s) to take advantage of those animals best characteristic. A typical scenario of this method usually involves breeding your best boar with a sow, and then breeding him again with one of those female offspring (his daughter), and then breeding him yet again with a female offspring of his daughter (his grand-daughter). Linebreeding an be done through either a males or a females lineage, not just a boar’s. The choice is made based on the quality of the animal and not on the gender of the animal.
Inbreeding
Inbreeding is the term used to describe the method of breeding guinea pigs that are very closely related, like a brother and sister. Offspring from this type of brother-sister union may then be bred back to the parents. Again, the reason for using this arrangement for breeding cavies is to establish and reproduce a desirable genetic characteristic that is common to both parents.
Weaning the Cavy Pups
Cavy pups are born very well developed, with teeth and eyes wide open, and can actually eat solid food within days of being born. But they still need their mothers milk until they are at least 2 weeks old, and preferably 3 weeks old.
Now that you have a litter of weaned pups it is your responsibility to make sure that you find a caring and loving home that will provide excellent care of each and every one of them.
